In a quiet workshop far from the world of mass production, a team of master craftspeople set out to build something extraordinary: a piano that is also a sculpture, a story, and a legacy. The Madness of Moonlight follows Frank, a perfectionist and visionary, as he pours his heart, time, and future into creating a one-of-a-kind instrument.
From raw timber to final polish, the film reveals a creative process that is as emotional as it is technical. Frank’s journey is shaped by the lessons of his parents, the pressures of survival, and the weight of making something truly lasting. Against all odds, set in a warehouse in New Jersey as well as the rich cultural backdrop of Vienna and inspired by Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, this is a story about art, obsession, and what it means to give everything to one idea.

Submitter Statement
Frank Pollaro’s story is unlikely; leaping from the pages of a Horatio Alger story. With only a high school education, Pollaro built a reputation for crafting singular furniture pieces which are considered functional art, for a global clientele which consists of celebrities and billionaires.
In the unassuming town of Hillside New Jersey his warehouse is full of vintage machinery, a collection of the most coveted wood, and several of the greatest craftsmen in the world. And after 35 years, Frank still introduces himself as a cabinet maker. Humble. Inconspicuous. A man of maniacal precision, absolutely obsessed with perfection; a man at the apex of his craft.
During the pandemic, when clients were reeling it in, Frank transcended his emotions through what he's known for globally: a profound dialog between nature and artistry. It took 9000 hours and millions borrowed from his bank. There's not a musical bone in his body, but Frank and his team may have just built the world’s most brilliant piano.
Originally meant for a 20 minute short, we kept documenting as Covid reared its head. The entire Pollaro team poured their souls into this piece while Frank contemplated his mortality, legacy, and his sanity. Four years passed before he agreed to let me get more personal. What remains is just enough to fall a little bit in love with the gentle father and the mad genius that is Frank.
In an age of AI and instant everything, The Madness of Moonlight is a much needed tribute to the slow, methodical, and soulful discipline of true craftsmanship. A meditation on patience and the constant pursuit of artistic perfection. The connection between our creative minds, beating hearts, and human hands. A sweet story about a son, a father, a husband, and a living legend relentlessly dedicated to the spirit of craft.
Leigh-Ann has made a career out her childhood obsession. She travels the world capturing both moving and still images connecting with creative and fascinating humans. Her work includes partnerships with Bösendorfer, Volvo, Wüsthof, Opus One Winery, and many more. She has honed her craft in focusing on artisans whether it be craftsmen (and women), farmers, winemakers, luthiers, and musicians but also has been recently dedicated to cataloging the Opioid epidemic in her home town.
There’s something about creative humans transcending passion through their hands that captivates her. Something about the blood, sweat, and tears. Leigh-Ann was the second camera on “Carmine Street Guitars,” a documentary produced by Jim Jarmusch that won “Top Ten Best Documentaries of 2019” in RollingStone, and Variety Magazines. Venice Film Festival held its world premier and the movie was screened at Toronto Film Festival, SXSW, New York Film Festival, and many more. Her work can be seen in publications such as Wine Spectator, Forbes, Architectural Digest, Food & Wine, as well as features on MSNBC and CBS News.
