When a compassionate helpline counsellor begins grow concerned for the safety of one of her clients, she's forced to decide whether to trust her instincts or follow protocol. Safe is a tense, quietly powerful drama about the weight of responsibility and the courage it takes to listen.

Submitter Statement

From Executive Producer Jeremy Theobald - producer and lead actor on Christopher Nolan's debut film "Following" (1998) - and funded by The Isle of Man Arts Council's Film Fund, Safe is a quiet but urgent reminder that sometimes, the smallest moments of compassion can be life-saving.

Our aim with Safe is to highlight the importance of those who listen through all of life’s noise and silence, the power of trusting one’s instinct, the complexity of being trapped in a cycle of abuse, and the courage it takes to reach out.

We want to emphasise the significance of catching the more inconspicuous, subtle signs of abuse that often go undetected, and not letting them slip through the cracks. Too often, abuse only becomes clearly detectable once it’s too late and it has already reached a high level of violence and danger. This film aims to highlight the power of scrutinising the small signs, and trusting one’s gut in knowing when something isn’t right.

Safe is about that. It's about being the person on the other end of the call. The one who hears the unspoken. The one who chooses to care, even when it might not be their place.

Govind Chandran holds a 1st Class Honours degree and Masters in Film and currently is Senior Lecturer in Film at Oxford Brookes University. British-born, Malaysian-raised, of Sri Lankan decent - Govind is the epitome of the term: international.

As part of his role at the university, Govind is responsible for the practical filmmaking components of the degree, supervising students final major projects. Govind has worked on shorts for over 10 years with an extensive festival track record.
