Submitter Statement

Director's Statement As the director of the documentary "I Talk to My Father," my aim is to portray the fears of artists. This film narrates my journey toward understanding my fears and serves as a voice for my generation against rejection. By using archival photos and my personal space, I aimed to share my story and those of others. I hope this film encourages viewers to confront their fears.

I am Nahid Bodaghi, born in 1991 in Dashti, a town in Bushehr. Since childhood, art has been an inseparable part of my life. From a young age, I explored various forms of art, including theater, storytelling, painting, and poetry, each of which played a role in shaping my outlook on life. At the age of 18, I began writing poetry seriously, and since then, my poems have been published in various literary magazines, motivating me to continue my artistic journey. Studying sociology at Mazandaran University opened a new window for me, offering a deeper understanding of society and human interactions. This academic background not only gave me a fresh perspective on social dynamics but also significantly influenced my approach to art, especially in filmmaking. In 2017, I began my journey into documentary photography and gradually developed an interest in documentary filmmaking. The year 2019 marked a turning point in my career when I made my first workshop film titled “Dokhto.” This film explored my personal life, focusing on why my high school friends had married while I remained single. It was a personal introspection, allowing me to use the language of cinema to express my inner thoughts and experiences. After "Dokhto," I collaborated with a friend to co-direct a film called "Jabir," which tackled environmental issues and protested the industrial development around rural areas, focusing on the destruction of natural pastures for animals. This project showed me how I could use cinema as a tool to raise awareness about social and environmental issues. In the following years, I directed several music-art pieces based on my own poetry and worked on editing several other documentary films. In 2021, I delved into professional screenwriting, resulting in one feature-length screenplay and several short scripts, each reflecting different aspects of my experiences and viewpoints. During the COVID-19 pandemic, like many others, I spent a lot of time at home. During this period, I became captivated by the alley outside my kitchen window, which occupied my mind for an entire year. I observed and documented the subtle changes and daily happenings in that alley. This simple yet profound experience led me to create the documentary "Talking to My Father," which dealt with a deeply personal issue and resulted in an intimate and honest portrayal of various aspects of my life and my relationship with my father.
