Submitter Statement
I was approached by Bill Davenport, a member of the Perryville Crew, who sadly told me he had just a couple months left to live and wanted his family to know his story. I had been working on another wildfire documentary, but due to Bills condition I understood time was of the essence to finish this story. I have witnessed the power of healing through story telling as Bill has survived another 18 months since we started working together.
This tragic story of an inmate crew that was overcome by a fire. Six crew members died and several critically burned. This harrowing story of courage, resilience and redemption will touch you as it has touched me.
A historian, writer, wildland firefighter, Director Scott E. Briggs interweaves expressive tales from characters as iconic as the vast Sonoran Desert which he roams. His ability to get to the heart of the story and reveal the human connections is what drives his purpose. His projects include the award winning documentaries "Compassion Spreads Like Wildfire,' and "A Dirty Secret."
