“Whose child Are You?” is a documentary that combines real footage with AI-generated images to tell the story of Silvio, a 64-year-old man from Castelnuovo Scrivia, a small village rich in tradition. A former printer, Silvio decided to change his life at the age of 60 by opening a restaurant in the village. The place has a deep connection with his childhood: it is the same bar where he first entered at his mother’s request, aged 4, and was asked, “Whose child are you?” This question, which reflects the importance of traditions and family identities in the village, accompanies Silvio in his search for himself and in the transformation of his life. His story is a tale of change, connection to his roots, and questions of identity.

Submitter Statement

"Di Chi Sei Figlio?" is an intimate and experimental journey centered on my father and set in the small village of Castelnuovo Scrivia, where I grew up. The movie originates from a childhood memory my father used to share with me, which I've transformed into a more abstract and metaphorical narrative. The question "Whose son are you?" is not just a simple inquiry; in a village like ours, it carries the weight of identity and belonging, a way of defining who you are within a tight-knit community. Mixing traditional documentary techniques with a more symbolic approach, I used generative artificial intelligence to create a parallel narrative dimension. This allowed me to give visual form to memories that would otherwise remain intangible, and to explore the intersection of memory and imagination. As a documentary filmmaker, authenticity continues to be at the heart of my work, but I wanted to experiment with new forms of storytelling that blended the real and the abstract. Through this project, I've come to think about how truth can be represented in many different ways, beyond simply documenting facts. I've discovered that through abstraction and experimentation it is possible to reveal deeper layers of reality, touching not only on my father's life, but also on my own journey as his daughter and storyteller.
Giulia Maniezzo is passionate about real stories and obsessed with editing. She loves asking questions and creating emotions with images. Growing up in Italy, surrounded by ancient monuments and landscapes, shaped her aesthetic sense. Later she moved to Germany and spent over a decade as a freelance editor, working with production companies, renowned directors and TV stations. When she's not editing, you can find her on crazy adventures collecting sticks and making fun projects with her twin boys. Now she's moving into directing, combining her love of storytelling with the intriguing world of generative artificial intelligence.
