"Everybody Calls Me Curly" is a captivating biographical documentary film that takes viewers on a journey to Octopus Point, where they meet Curly Newman. Born on a boat on Sansum Narrows and raised on the secluded coast of Vancouver Island, Curly is a master storyteller imbued with a deep sense of personal history. He shares an intimate collection of stories from his upbringing in a large family, nestled in the remote reaches of Vancouver Island. The film delves into their life of living off the land and sea, painting a vivid picture of a time marked by minimal contact with the outside world, offering a unique glimpse into a life shaped by nature and isolation.

Submitter Statement

I'm Patrick Moore, a filmmaker passionate about storytelling, particularly focusing on local communities and how they shape the history of their areas. I'm fascinated by narratives that connect people to their roots and reveal the deeper social and cultural layers of a place. My first documentary, "Everybody Calls Me Curly", reflects this passion. It explores the remote reaches of Vancouver Island, delving into the lives of those living off the land and sea. The film paints a vivid picture of a time marked by minimal contact with the outside world, offering a unique glimpse into a life shaped by nature and isolation. The stories of past generations continue to influence the present, and this connection forms the heart of my work. I believe that by sharing these often-overlooked narratives, we can foster a deeper appreciation for the role communities play in shaping both their local history and the broader cultural landscape. As I continue my journey in filmmaking, my goal is to create films that preserve these valuable histories and inspire viewers to reflect on the places they call home.
With over two decades in film production, I've developed my skills working primarily with corporate clients and special events. This path has shaped my approach to visual storytelling, where I've learned to balance creative expression with meeting client needs. My work has ranged from branded marketing campaigns to event coverage, experiences that have strengthened my abilities in cinematography, editing, and managing complex projects. This journey has also taught me to stay flexible and problem-solve in all kinds of production settings. In 2024, I directed my first documentary, "Everybody Calls Me Curly", marking a meaningful shift from client-focused work to more personal storytelling. Driven by a genuine passion for telling human stories, this documentary allowed me to dive deep into themes of identity and personal narrative. Drawing on the lessons of my career, I approached this project with a commitment to authenticity, emotion, and the small details that make stories feel real.
